Are you comfortable doing all of the things you need to do to make your business successful? As small business owners we must wear many hats and sometimes one or many of these are way outside of our comfort zone.
Imagine what it would be like if we always stayed in our comfort zone. Here is my personal story.
I graduated from college with a degree in Biology Secondary education, but was unable to get a permanent teaching job. Just as now, the economy was slow and teaching jobs were hard to come by. I applied for a job at IBM thinking it would be temporary until the teaching market opened up.I started in manufacturing, moved on to computer operator, then programmer, went back to graduate school for Computer Science and received many promotions, pay increases, and great benefits. Can you guess what happened? I stayed for decades. I got very used to the salary, the lifestyle, benefits and prestige.
Mind you, I didn’t sit still on my job. During the course of many years I acquired two Masters degrees and about every two years I asked for a new and very different assignment. Some of these assignments involved quite a bit of risk to my career. I moved from computer operator to: computer programmer, project lead, project manager and project executive. I stayed in my comfort zone and ventured out of it as well. My comfort zone was the corporate job and the so called security it offered. I stepping outside of my comfort zone by acquiring degrees and challenging myself with new and untried assignments. These assignments “stretched” my comfort level.
In corporations and government organizations, employees can fall into a feeling of entitlement where they expect their salary and benefits because they work there for xx number of years and not because of what they do. They get too comfortable in their situation.
When we are business owners we too can become lethargic and feel entitled. We have a passion, are excellent at what we do, but are we going above and beyond for our clients? Are we stepping outside of our level of comfort to do what is needed to reach our business goals?
We need to take risks, to try new ideas and to continuously over-delight our clients in order to grow our businesses and reach success. Fear of the unknown often holds us back.
A bit of fear is healthy because it keeps us sharp. One of the biggest fears most people have is the fear of change. Lack of change keeps us complacent. Change which is forced on us can cause resentment. Necessary change keeps us moving forward, relevant, and current with the needs of our clients.
So how do we move out of entitlement and ultimately into success? To move towards success we need to go through a period of fear.
Why do we need to go into fear to reach true success? When people are in true entitlement, any change from that condition will feel like fear – the fear of the unknown. You need this level of fear to be motivated to change. Change is ultimately is the only way to succeed.
So, what are your plans to take the next steps…to reach for the top…to step outside of your comfort zone!!
Thinking outside of the box and being flexible are wonderful attributes any business owner can use so they can step outside of their comfort zone to reach for the success they so desire.
“Can you see the power of stepping outside of your comfort zone by thinking outside of the box? It means leaving behind frustration, anger, stress, and fear. Are you ready to be creative? Can you create in your business the reality of infinite possibilities leading you to the success you desire?” – Lauren Paparone
